Falling in Love with Fall Planters

So as we are soon to wrap up Summer, I know some of you are wondering, what makes a good fall planter? Well that’s why I’m here to help give you some ideas to think about when you are thinking of creating your own Fall planters or having one installed by your favorite Floral Designer (if you’re in the Nashville area), moi!

First thing first. To me a nice fall planter screams nice, rich and even warm but vibrant tones. Typically plants that remind us of how the leaves turn colors when Fall arrives. Or even cooler tones that remind us of “first frost” in addition to those that remind us of Fall harvest. This reminds me, don’t forget to play with textures!

Another thing I should mention is that Fall planters are very different from Winter or even year round planters especially if you live in a similar region/zone to us here in Nashville, Tennessee. Here we get varied temperatures ranging from below freezing well into 100 degree day days. Even when it doesn’t quite reach 100 degrees, it sure feels like it! Which brings me to my next point. With a Fall planter we’re typically thinking something that will last until Thanksgiving time. So you want to keep in mind your “typical temperatures” mostly the lower temperatures for that time.

When picking blooming plants you also want to consider plants that bloom in cooler weather like the very common Pansies and Violas. They are a GREAT compliment to the annual Mums. You don't have to only use perennials or only annuals. Often times you can find a nice combination of annuals and perennials that suits your needs and allow you to fulfill packing your planters with beautiful tones. Sometimes you may even find things in your yard that can also be added for additional interest.

Lastly, even though you have surpassed most of the summer heat, you will still want to water your planters pretty consistently. At least maintain a routine for monitoring the moisture levels; as with early Fall, we typically will still see higher temperatures in the day along with lower temperatures at night.

I hope this post has been helpful as we head towards Fall. As always, fee free to contact Floradayleaf with your design needs. Virtual designs are available for those of you that like to do it yourself, but need a little help or that are not in the Nashville area.
